A New Jersey teacher who allegedly ripped a hijab off a Black Muslim 7-year-old is suing U.S. Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad for sharing the story on social media.
The teacher, Tamar Herman, is suing her and the school district, claiming she faced “discriminatory treatment.”
When the incident first came to light, Herman said she thought her student was wearing a hoodie and didn’t realize it was the traditional veil worn by many Muslim women.
The Essex County prosecutor’s office investigated Herman and couldn’t find any sufficient evidence to sustain a criminal prosecution in the case.
Zaynab Wyatt, the mother of the seven-year-old student, claimed other students remembered Herman telling her daughter that her hair was beautiful and she shouldn’t cover it up with a headscarf thats when she allegedly pulled it off her hijab.
