Hannah Einbinder, known for her role in “Hacks,” poked fun at Ed Sheeran in an Instagram story showing how much money the British singer is worth, adding a comment suggesting he gets an extremely painful sunburn.
“Ed Sheeran i say this as a ginger. i hope you get a REALLY bad sun burn the kind on the back of your entire body where it hurts to lie down or walk or sit,” she wrote in her Instagram story.
The 31-year-old Einbinder used a joke to refer to a trait common to people with red hair who tend to be more vulnerable to sunlight than others. Ed Sheeran, 35, is one of the most recognizable redheads in entertainment.
Einbinder’s calculation of Sheeran’s wealth matches Celebrity Net Worth’s $400 million estimate, which says his wealth comes from record sales, streaming, songwriting royalties, live performances, publishing, business ventures, and real estate. For instance, Sheeran’s Divide tour brought in $775.6 million, and his Mathematics tour brought in $875.7 million, making them some of the most successful tours ever.
Sheeran’s fifteen-year collaboration with Warner Music ended this year; according to the label, his career brought in 170 million album sales and 126 billion streams globally. The Sunday Times Rich List valued his wealth at £370 million ($448.6 million) in 2025, putting him among the richest people under 40 in Britain.
The singer, who was born in Suffolk, England, kicked off his “Loop” tour in January to support his album Play.
Einbinder’s post comes amid Sheeran’s ongoing controversy over removing rapper Macklemore from the US leg of his tour.
Macklemore performed for Sheeran at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on September 4 and 5, wearing a keffiyeh and performing the song “Hind’s Hall,” as well as leading chants of “Free Palestine” to images of Gaza.
Later, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft banned Macklemore from performing with Sheeran at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on September 25 and 26, stating that the venue would not provide a platform for “hate speech” and pointing out a long-standing history of antisemitic comments and imagery from the rapper.
The tour promoter, Messina Touring Group, confirmed that Macklemore will no longer perform in any US venues because several venues have refused to host him.
In a statement posted on Monday, Macklemore said he had been making these same comments during performances around the world for almost three years. “So why is it an issue now?” he asked, adding that Sheeran told him that Kraft had convinced other stadium owners to make an ultimatum.
Kraft confirmed his stance on holding the performance in Gillette Stadium but did not clarify if other owners were on the same side. Among those who supported Macklemore’s statement was Einbinder, alongside Kehlani, Paloma Faith, MUNA, and others. Representatives of Sheeran did not comment on this incident on Monday.
Einbinder gained fame as Ava Daniels, an aspiring comedy writer who worked opposite Jean Smart in the HBO Max show “Hacks,” which aired from 2021 to 2026. The role earned her an Emmy for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series in 2025, after three prior nominations. The actress closed her acceptance speech that night with a call to free Palestine.
A Los Angeles native, Einbinder is the daughter of Laraine Newman, an original “Saturday Night Live” cast member. Einbinder made her national TV appearance doing stand-up for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” in 2020. In 2023, Einbinder made her film debut starring in the comedy “Seekers of Infinite Love.”
Sheeran has had international hits like “Shape of You,” “Thinking Out Loud,” and “Perfect.” Also, Sheeran has written songs for Justin Bieber and other singers.
