Less than an hour into deliberations Tuesday, the Amber Guyger trial jury requested clarification of manslaughter & the castle doctrine, which allows the use of deadly force under certain conditions to protect your home.
The jury could have convicted Amber Guyger of murder, manslaughter or acquitted her. She now faces between 5 and 99 years in prison and will be sentenced later today. Botham Jean’s attorneys said the jury sent questions about the Castle Doctrine measure while deliberating.
“It was unreasonable — she should’ve known she was in the wrong apartment … that is garbage,” Assistant District Attorney said about Amber Guyger’s testimony.
Let’s be clear: Amber Guyger could not “stand her ground” in a house that wasn’t hers. The house belonged to Botham Jean.
Very few officers are convicted for killing black people. This is accountability. Justice means Botham Jean would still be alive.
