Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has publicly criticized the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for failing to include a Palestinian speaker at its upcoming convention, sparking a debate within the party over its stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In a pointed tweet, the progressive congresswoman wrote, “Just as we must honor the humanity of hostages, so too must we center the humanity of the 40,000 Palestinians killed under Israeli bombardment.” Her message underscores the ongoing tensions within the Democratic Party, where voices like Ocasio-Cortez’s are increasingly calling for a more balanced approach to U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.
Ocasio-Cortez, often referred to by her initials AOC, continued her criticism by stating, “To deny that story is to participate in the dehumanization of Palestinians. The [DNC] must change course and affirm our shared humanity.” Her remarks reflect growing frustration among progressives who believe the party is not doing enough to acknowledge the suffering of Palestinians in the face of ongoing conflict.
The DNC has yet to respond to Ocasio-Cortez’s comments. However, her call for inclusion is expected to reignite discussions about the party’s foreign policy platform, particularly its position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The exclusion of a Palestinian voice at the convention may signal the party’s reluctance to fully embrace the progressive shift advocated by Ocasio-Cortez and her allies.
This is not the first time Ocasio-Cortez has criticized her party’s leadership on issues related to Israel and Palestine. She has previously called for a reevaluation of U.S. military aid to Israel and has been a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights on Capitol Hill.
