Apple Original Films has lifted the curtain on the trailer for “Fancy Dance,” an eagerly anticipated selection from the Sundance Film Festival. The film, produced by Confluential Films, features Lily Gladstone, known for her award-winning performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” in the lead role. Directed by Erica Tremblay, “Fancy Dance” marks her debut in feature filmmaking, where she also co-wrote and produced the project.
Scheduled for release, “Fancy Dance” will hit select theaters on June 21, 2024, with a global debut on Apple TV+ following on June 28, 2024.
The film follows the journey of Jax, portrayed by Lily Gladstone, who assumes the responsibility of caring for her niece, Roki, played by Isabel Deroy-Olson, following her sister’s disappearance. Set against the backdrop of the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma, Jax navigates the challenges of everyday life while endeavoring to locate her missing sibling. As she prepares Roki for an imminent powwow, Jax risks losing custody to Roki’s grandfather, Frank, portrayed by Shea Whigham. Together, Jax and Roki embark on a poignant journey across the backcountry in a bid to reunite with Roki’s mother before the powwow commences.
What starts as a quest for closure unfolds into a profound exploration of the struggles faced by Indigenous women in a world marred by colonization and a flawed justice system. The film boasts a stellar cast including Ryan Begay, Crystle Lightning, Audrey Wasilewski, and Shea Whigham alongside Gladstone and Deroy-Olson.
“Fancy Dance,” a collaboration between Confluential Films and Significant Productions/AUM Group, introduces the directorial talents of Erica Tremblay, who also co-authored the screenplay with Miciana Alise. The production is helmed by Deidre Backs, Erica Tremblay, Heather Rae, Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Tommy Oliver, with executive production credits going to Bird Runningwater, Lily Gladstone, Forest Whitaker, and Charlotte Koh.
