Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey announce they will appear in a new production of “Sunday in the Park with George.” They posted a picture on Instagram with the message “All it has to be is good.”
It was suggested last year that a possible revival of the musical in 2027 might be led by Jonathan and Ariana, with the musical directed by Marianne Elliott, based on Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s work.
The musical is inspired by the painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by artist Georges Seurat. This painting captures the activity of people of various social classes on a Sunday afternoon in a Parisian park along the Seine River.
Lapine and Sondheim speculate about who the characters in Seurat’s painting might be and how he may have created it. The characters are introduced, including Dot, George’s clever lover and inspiration. In the second act, the actress portrays Dot’s daughter, Marie.
