In an interview with CNN’s Don Riddell, Bird, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, contrasted the public perception of the WNBA and women’s soccer.
Bird was asked about the subject following a Player’s Tribune column by soccer star Megan Rapinoe, who captains the US Women’s National Team. In the column, Rapinoe said that the USWNT was seen as “straight, cute, unthreatening, suburban white girls next door” and cited homophobia and racism as reasons for the contrast in perceptions of the WNBA and women’s soccer.
