Black Panther Has Surpassed Titanic to Become the Third Highest Grossing US Theatrical Release of All Time

For years, James Cameron’s Titanic was the golden standard by which all American theatrical releases were judged, the magic money maker that no one would ever beat. Then, Cameron himself beat it, with Avatar, and a few years later Star Wars: The Force Awakens rocketed past both of those.

Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther” is the definition of black excellence the film continues to make history. The Marvel blockbuster broke yet another record on Saturday, surpassing James Cameron’s 1997 epic film “Titanic” as the third highest grossing film of all time in the U.S. box office.

Almost two months after debuting in theaters, “Black Panther” has officially sunk the $695 million box office record set by “Titanic,” according to Friday’s box office numbers.

Black Panther also made history by being the first movie shown when Saudi Arabia opens its first cinema in 35 years – bringing an end to a ban in the deeply conservative country.

Barring any kind of miracle, Black Panther looks to finish it’s domestic run third behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.6 million) and Avatar ($760.5 million).

Black Panther will most likely finish second behind the Star Wars: The Force Awakens either this is great for black culture. We finally got a superhero movie with a majority of a black cast where young black kids can see a visual of black excellence in cinema.
