Charli XCX explained in a statement shared on social media as the controversy continued to build up. She claimed that she and her team were not aware of any Russian affiliations linked to the Berlin party afterparty she attended.
In a note shared in her Instagram story, the singer tried to clarify the situation and distance herself from the alleged political affiliations.
“Hi everyone < 3. For clarity, neither me nor my team were aware of any of the alleged affiliations around the party in Berlin. I would like to take this opportunity to say I stand against the atrocities committed by the Russian government in Ukraine and I stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.”
The controversy arose when fans and social media users asked why the singer attended the party, suggesting that the party needed to be vetted first.
“But she was warned ahead of time and still went… she can keep the apology, we know she’s an evil person,” a social media user said.
Another user responded to the singer’s explanation, saying, “wdym ‘neither me nor my team were aware’? It’s literally your team’s job to do a background check before agreeing to events…”
“I get not being aware, but it’s a bit odd that her team wasn’t aware,” a third user said.
Representatives for Charli XCX have not publicly commented beyond the Instagram statement.
