Chyna Carrillo: 24-Year-Old Transgender Woman Killed In Broad Daylight

Today, we mourn Chyna Carrillo, whose name was also Chyna Cardena, a 24-year-old Latinx transgender woman who was killed in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania on Feb. 18th.

Police shot and killed her killer as he was beating her to death. She is at least the 7th trans or gender nonconforming person killed in 2021, according to multiple reports.

Carrillo was a nursing home worker who had moved to Pennsylvania from Arkansas to start a new life. Those who knew Carrillo said she was confident, outspoken and unapologetic about who she was. A former coworker of Carrilo’s said that is precisely why the two had bonded.

Chyna was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown where she died. Investigators identified the suspect as Juan Carter Hernandez, who was convicted of killing someone in Jacksonville back in 2011. Chyna 25th birthday was right around the corner, March 3rd.
