Florida Man Oversleeps Jury Duty. Judge later punished Deandre Somerville with a 10 day jail sentence, 1 yr. probation, 150 hours of community service.
Somerville works at afterschool programs for the city of West Palm Beach Parks & Recreation Dept.
Deandre Somerville’s sentence was reduced to 3 months probation, 30 hours of community service, an apology letter, and a $223 fine. He has already served the 10 days in jail.
At the hearing, he said, “I am extremely sorry for my actions…”
“They handcuffed me in the courtroom after that,” said 21yo Deandre Somerville, who spent the next 10 days in jail.
“Now I have a record. I almost feel like a criminal now. Now, I have to explain this in every interview.”
In what way do such punitive measures benefit society?
After public outrage, the judge cleared his record. Deandre Somerville’s record will be erased, but that doesn’t make the 10 days he spent in jail any less outrageous.
