Federal Judge Sentenced Derek Chauvin To 21 Years In Prison, Which Will Run Concurrent With His 22.5 Year State Conviction

A federal judge on Thursday sentenced Derek Chauvin to 21 years in prison for violating George Floyd’s civil rights.

The brother of George Floyd asked the judge to make Derek Chauvin serve his state and federal sentences back-to-back: “My brother was murdered in broad daylight with a knee to his neck for 9 minutes.”

Chauvin took a plea deal to avoid a possible life sentence at trial. The sentence will be concurrent with his 22.5-year state murder sentence.

The former Minneapolis police officer made no apology for his actions in his sentencing hearing, instead offering the victim’s families including Georg Floyd’s daughter this: “I wish them all the best in their life and have excellent guidance in becoming great adults”.

Derek Chauvin will serve his time in the federal system, where he may be safer and may be held under fewer restrictions than in the state system.
