“Hacks” Emmy Winner Hannah Einbinder’s Viral Speech: “Go Birds, Fuck ICE and Free Palestine”

When I state that the 77th Emmy Awards treated us to this night’s moment, that of Hannah Einbinder in that downtown Los Angeles-based Peacock Theater, holding her first golden statuette, and screaming in victory at the world, “This is punk rock!”

The Hacks lead won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and, gag, this category was stacked. I mean, it’s Catherine O’Hara, Kathryn Hahn, Janelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jessica Williams, and Liza Colón-Zayas. Legends. Icons. Queens. Still, the Television Academy saw fit to crown Einbinder a winner, and in my honest opinion? They made the right call.

A Speech That Stole the Show

Accompanied by Reba McEntire and Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman (yes, country royalty is in attendance), Einbinder walked out onto the stage in disbelief. She began with what was maybe the sweetly clumsy confession:

“I was so committed to the personal history that it was the cooler thing to continue losing. I was about as committed to that as you could be, had to be, huh? But this is cool too. This is punk rock too!”

It was a performance that was a little rough around the edges in the very best way: raw, hilarious, and utterly her. She then got sentimental, lavishing praise upon Hacks creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, whom she hailed as “changing my life in every conceivable way” not only as creative partners, but as family.

And then there was the love letter to Jean Smart, her co-star and fellow Emmy winner of the night:

“Jean Smart is my sun and I’m privileged to bask in her warmth.”

My heart did not melt, did it?.

From Humor to Politics in 60 Seconds

But because it’s Hannah Einbinder, she didn’t simply conclude in thank-yous and tears. No ma’am. She wrapped up by going full-activist, releasing:

“Go birds, f*ck ICE and free Palestine.”

It was a mic-drop moment that sent people into a frenzy in a matter of seconds. Some stared, others yelled, but there’s no doubt, no one forgot.

Role That Won it All

Einbinder’s award-winning turn as Ava Daniels in Hacks has been one of the most exciting performances in comedy television. Playing the young, whip-smart, often unfiltered writer opposite Jean Smart’s veteran Vegas diva Deborah Vance, she brings both chaos and vulnerability to a role that could have easily been sidelined in lesser hands. Instead, she’s carved out a character that feels as iconic as the show itself.

And the industry unequivocally concurred. Hacks not only left with Einbinder’s statue, but it also came in with a total of 14 nominations, including Best Comedy Series and Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Smart, who also won the award.

Lady Boss Emmy Moment

What makes this win extra special? The energy of the whole room. Hosted by Nate Bargatze, the ceremony might have had its usual glitz and polished teleprompter banter, but Einbinder’s moment cut through the noise. Her speech wasn’t perfectly rehearsed or dipped in cliché; it was bold, messy, heartfelt, political, and, yes, punk rock.

As someone who lives for award season, I can proudly declare: this is the caliber of acceptance speech that makes us remember why we tune in not merely for gowns, not merely for gold, but because of moments of humanity, of rebellion, of joy that make the Emmys come alive. Hannah Einbinder did not simply take home an Emmy. She won it, in her words, in her politics, in her punk sensibility. And god forbid, that’s what makes award shows magical.
