Oi, SLTs! Production of the highly-anticipated third and final season of Heartbreak High has officially commenced in Sydney, Australia, on Gadigal, Dharug, Dharawal, and Ku-ring-gai country. This third season marks the close of an era for Heartbreak High fans as the Hartley High gang prepares to say goodbye to school and dive head-first into all the highs and lows that young adulthood has to offer.

The stakes have never been higher in Season 3, as chaos erupts and an elaborate revenge prank gone wrong tests the boundaries for a group of seniors. Led by Amerie, the beloved ensemble must navigate new responsibilities thrown into disarray by a dangerous cover-up that threatens to upend everything they hold dear.

Heartbreak High, produced by Fremantle Australia in association with NewBe, will launch globally on Netflix and further extend the platform’s growing suite of local Australian content. Heartbreak High joins recent successful commissions including Territory, Boy Swallows Universe, Run Rabbit Run, Wellmania, Surviving Summer, ONEFOUR: Against All Odds, and Love is in the Air, bolstering Netflix’s focus on surfacing and celebrating Australian talent and storytelling.

Behind the Scenes

Season 3 was created by the creator of Heartbreak High, Hannah Carroll Chapman, who captured the complex mix between comedy and drama that has resonated with audiences around the world. It stars Sarah Freeman as producer, Carly Heaton as executive producer, and Megan Palinkas as co-executive producer, serving also as one of its writers. Anna Curtis joins as co-producer, ensuring a deeply creatively aligned team brings Hartley High’s story to a fitting close.

A Record-Breaking Series

Since its revival, Heartbreak High has captured audiences’ attention across continents, reaped accolades, and broken records. Season 2 premiered on Netflix on April 11, 2024, and became one of the top 10 shows in Australia. It stayed on the Global Top 10 English TV Series list for three weeks. The season hit high spots on Netflix’s charts across 53 countries, including the UK, Europe, Africa, and Asia, with viewership numbers over 47.8 million hours. The resonance of the show is so much more than numbers. Heartbreak High created a cultural phenomenon on TikTok as the hashtag #HeartbreakHigh then racked up a whopping over two billion views with fans sharing everything from their reactions to episodes, all the way to deep dives into character analyses.

Awards and Accolades

Acclaimed critically, Heartbreak High boasts an impressive list of awards. In 2023, it snagged the International Emmy Award for Best Kids: Live-Action and won a Logie Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor with Thomas Weatherall. It was nominated for Most Popular Drama and Most Popular New Talent, a testament to the breakout performances of Ayesha Madon and Chloé Hayden.

Further recognition of the show’s success came at the 2022 AACTA Awards with titles such as Best Supporting Actor in a Drama for Thomas Weatherall, Best Screenplay in Television for Hannah Carroll Chapman, and Best Costume Design in Television for Rita Carmody. The supporters also had something to say; the people’s vote landed Heartbreak High as Best TV Show, while Bryn Chapman-Parish and Chloe Hayden won Audience Choice Awards for Best Actor and Actress respectively.

The End of an Era

As Heartbreak High enters its final season, audiences are bracing themselves for an emotional goodbye. The Season 3 arc will most likely go out with that same bold, reaching storytelling and complex characters giving one final look into life at Hartley High. With laughter, heartache, and high-stakes drama, Heartbreak High has fast become a staple of Australian television and worldwide pop culture.

For those following Amerie and her friends through the ups and downs of love, loss, and every other curve and twist in between, this may be all but a bittersweet goodbye, yet one that will no doubt leave a lasting impact.
