Japanese girl group sensation f5ve released their newest single, “UFO,” out now via LDH Records. Co-produced by musical heavyweights BloodPop-known for his work with Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and Rina Sawayama-A.G. Cook for Charli XCX, Caroline Polachek, and Utada Hikaru, and Nomak-this track is poised to be an interstellar pop sensation.
“UFO” takes its inspiration from those addictively fun Japanese arcade claw machines, merging metallic synths with robotic verses and infectious melodies for which f5ve is so noted. The lyrics capture that feeling when you hit the jackpot at the arcade, while the sound is truly cosmic and forward-moving to fit perfectly within the distinctive group style.
Directed by Charlotte Rutherford for PinkPantheress, Nicki Minaj-and Crystalline Structures Studio for the video amplifies the song’s playful eccentricity even more. The members of f5ve are fashionable alien figures in the video, and they abduct the citizens of Tokyo with giant claws, collecting people and objects in capsules, a nod to Japan’s Gashapon machines. The bold visuals of the video, along with the girls’ chant, “GACHA, GACHA, GACHA… find out!
“UFO” arrives on the heels of a string of f5ve releases that included the dreamy “Lettuce” and the frenetic dance number “Underground.” The group unveiled the Underground Remixes EP last month, which found iconic DJs and producers such as TeddyLoid, DJ CHARI, STARKIDS, and Doss delivering all-new takes on the track.
With millions of streams already to their name, f5ve is quickly rising to international acclaim, receiving nods from global superstars such as Rosalía, and receiving support from major editorial outlets including GAY TIMES, NME, and DORK.
