In a new legal salvo, the famous rapper Jay-Z, through attorney Alex Spiro, has moved for sanctions against attorney Tony Buzbee. The action is in regard to a lawsuit filed against Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs for the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl following an after-party after the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Jay-Z says that Buzbee filed the lawsuit without sufficient research into the truth of the claims, causing him substantial reputational harm.
The motion, exclusively obtained by TMZ, points out numerous holes in the alleged victim’s story. For example, the woman said she was raped at one after-party, but Jay-Z’s team produced a photo of the rapper attending another show that night. The alleged victim also said she watched the award show on a Jumbotron outside of Radio City Music Hall because she couldn’t get inside. Jay-Z’s filing responds to that with proof that no such screen was outside the venue, as the city of New York had not allowed it at the time. Further, it is reported that the father of the accuser said he had no recollection of driving five hours to pick up his daughter, further contradicting her.
Accordingly, Jay-Z has used these discrepancies as evidence that, because Buzbee never performed any pre-filing diligence, he must have acted with malice to injure his reputation. To that, Buzbee promptly dismissed the motion as an obvious desperate attempt at intimidation, writing, “With each frantic filing, Mr. Spiro’s team reeks of desperation. We won’t be bullied or intimidated, ever.”
This development now brings another layer to the already complex case pitting Jay-Z against Buzbee. Previously, a New York judge denied Jay-Z’s motion to force the accuser to disclose her identity, thus allowing the plaintiff to keep anonymity in the case. The case keeps unraveling, with both parties firm in their stance.
As the litigation unfolds, the decision on the motion for sanctions will determine what route this celebrated cause will take before the court.
