Kendrick Lamar seems to show his presence in hip-hop yet again after it emerged that his latest album ‘GNX‘ crossed the billion-stream mark on Spotify in just 37 days. This now places the album as one of the fastest-streamed rap projects in recent history, securing the number four position on an impressive list of rap’s most rapidly consumed albums.
The milestone is noteworthy as it represents pure album performance, excluding pre-release singles that often inflate streaming numbers. This puts ‘GNX‘ in elite company, outpacing recent heavyweight releases like Drake’s ‘For All The Dogs’ (41 days) and Travis Scott’s ‘CHROMAKOPIA’ (49 days).
This, of course, while Drake’s ‘Scorpion’ keeps its crown as the fastest rap album to reach the billion-stream mark at 18 days, followed by Travis Scott’s ‘UTOPIA’ at 28 days and Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ at 30 days. The feat cements Lamar’s consistent ability to drive huge streaming numbers while retaining artistic integrity.
For one, the billion-stream club has become ever more significant in the streaming era, almost acting as a metric of the commercial impact of an album. What makes this achievement all the more remarkable is that it represents organic growth from the album’s release date and not accumulated streams from pre-released singles.
This performance adds to Lamar’s already impressive catalog, considering how his previous work ‘DAMN.’ achieved the same feat in 58 days during a different time and space regarding streaming.
Considering that the performance of ‘GNX‘ is faster, this could reveal both the growth in Lamar’s commercial popularity and the expansion in the general market of streams.
