Kevin Hart will appeared in an hour-long exclusive interview on “Ellen” where he talked about the controversy surrounding him stepping down to host the 91st Annual Academy Awards.
During their interview, Ellen DeGeneres told Kevin Hart that she called the Academy to ask the leaders if they would reconsider having him host this year’s Oscars. She didn’t specifically mention whom she talked to, but she said they admitted to possibly mishandling the situation. Ellen said she was told, “We want him to host, we feel like maybe he misunderstood or it was handled wrong, or maybe we said the wrong thing.” She continued to say she was told, “But we want him to host. Whatever we can do, we want him to host.”
Earlier in their discussion, Kevin talked about how hosting the Oscars was one of his goals, and it was quickly overshadowed by old tweets he had previously apologized for. Not wanting the controversy behind the tweets to take away from what the show was really about, Kevin decided to just step down.
Nonetheless, speaking about the situation with Ellen, and Ellen’s support, Kevin said he would evaluate everything following their discussion. He said, “Leaving here I promise you I’m evaluating this conversation. This is a conversation I needed to have, I’m glad I had it here. I’m glad it’s as authentic and real as I could’ve hoped it would be.” Ellen, who previously hosted the Oscars herself, was very adamant about convincing Kevin to take on the hosting role once again and to ignore the trolls. She said, “Whatever is going on, on the Internet, don’t pay attention to them. That’s a small group of people being very, very loud. We are a huge group of people who love you and want to see you host the Oscars.” It is no secret that the Academy has been having a hard time finding a replacement after Kevin stepped down back in December.
