Kim Kardashian has publicly called for increased compensation for incarcerated individuals serving as firefighters amid the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires.
In a series of Instagram Stories posted on January 11, 2025, the reality star and criminal justice advocate highlighted the critical role these individuals play in combating the fires and the inadequate wages they receive for their perilous work.
Kardashian expressed her gratitude toward all firefighters, stating, “I have spent the last week watching my city burning. And have seen and spoken to many firefighters who are up all night long using every ounce of their strength to save our community.”
She emphasized the significant contribution of incarcerated firefighters, noting their involvement in multiple fires across Los Angeles, including the Palisades and Eaton fires. These individuals often work 24-hour shifts under hazardous conditions, receiving minimal compensation. Kardashian pointed out that their pay has remained at $1 per hour since 1984, without adjustments for inflation or the increasing severity of wildfires.
Addressing California Governor Gavin Newsom directly, Kardashian urged an increase in wages for these firefighters, advocating for a raise to $5 per hour—a proposal that was recently rejected.
She stated, “I am urging [Gavin Newsom] to do what no Governor has done in 4 decades, and raise the incarcerated firefighter pay to a rate that honors a human being risking their life to save our lives and homes.”
Kardashian also acknowledged the efforts of formerly incarcerated firefighters from the Ventura Training Center, who have continued to serve their communities post-release.
She highlighted legislative measures that allow these individuals to have their sentences reduced and felonies expunged in recognition of their service, facilitating their transition into professional firefighting roles.
The Los Angeles wildfires have had a direct impact on the Kardashian family, with evacuation orders issued for Calabasas and Hidden Hills, where several family members reside. The Kenneth fire, in particular, has threatened properties in these areas, including Kim Kardashian’s $60 million estate.
In addition to her advocacy for fair compensation, Kardashian and her family have contributed to relief efforts by donating meals to fire stations and supporting wildfire victims.
Kardashian’s call to action has sparked discussions about the ethics and economics of utilizing incarcerated individuals in emergency response roles, particularly concerning fair compensation and recognition for their contributions.
As the wildfires continue to challenge California, the debate over the treatment and remuneration of incarcerated firefighters is likely to intensify.
