Rapper Lil Yachty has reignited controversy after calling the Black Lives Matter organization a “scam” during a candid moment on Quenlin Blackwell’s cooking show. His blunt criticism of BLM’s financial scandals comes after years of scrutiny over the organization’s handling of millions in donated funds.

Lil Yachty’s Blunt Criticism of BLM

During the episode, Blackwell casually asked Yachty, “How much have you spent on charitable causes this year… BLM?” The rapper wasted no time in responding.

“BLM is a scam… BLM was literally a scam. They had bought mansions,” he said without hesitation.

His remarks were met with immediate buzz, as they directly referenced the financial controversies that have plagued the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation.

BLM’s $6 Million Mansion Scandal

Yachty’s statement is not without merit. In 2022, investigative reports exposed that the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation had purchased a lavish 6,500-square-foot property in Los Angeles for $6 million using donation money. The mansion, featuring multiple bedrooms, a swimming pool, and a guesthouse, was reportedly acquired under a shell company to obscure its connection to BLM.

When the purchase was revealed, public backlash was swift. Many donors who had contributed money in the wake of George Floyd’s murder felt betrayed, questioning why an organization meant to uplift Black communities was using funds for luxury real estate. BLMGNF initially justified the purchase by claiming the property was intended as a “creator house” for Black artists and activists, but critics saw it as further proof of financial mismanagement.

A History of Financial Mismanagement

BLM’s financial scandals did not begin or end with the $6 million mansion. Co-founder Patrisse Cullors, who resigned from the organization in 2021, came under fire for amassing a personal real estate portfolio worth over $3 million. She denied using BLM donations for personal gain but admitted that the organization lacked financial transparency.

Further investigations into BLMGNF revealed that in 2020 alone, the group raised over $90 million, yet many families of victims whose names were used in fundraising efforts reported receiving little to no financial support. This fueled accusations that BLMGNF exploited the deaths of Black individuals while failing to distribute funds to those most in need.

Public Reaction and Ongoing Scrutiny

Lil Yachty’s remarks reflect a growing sentiment of disillusionment with BLM’s leadership. While the movement for racial justice remains vital, the scandals surrounding the organization’s finances have led many to distance themselves from the official BLM entity.

Despite repeated calls for transparency, BLMGNF has continued to face criticism over its spending practices. Multiple state attorneys general launched investigations into the organization’s financial dealings, and some states even moved to revoke its charitable registration due to failure to properly disclose financial records.

Yachty’s Words Strike a Nerve

Yachty, known for his unfiltered opinions, did not mince words when addressing the issue. His statement adds to the ongoing debate over whether BLMGNF was ever truly committed to its mission or if it became a vehicle for personal enrichment at the expense of those it claimed to represent.

Quenlin Blackwell did not challenge Yachty’s statement during the conversation, allowing the moment to pass without further discussion. However, the rapper’s words have already sent shockwaves through social media, with supporters and critics alike debating whether his assessment was harsh or simply an overdue reality check.

The Bigger Picture

The Black Lives Matter movement as a whole continues to be a powerful force in the fight for racial justice, but the scandals surrounding BLMGNF have cast a long shadow over its legacy. As more people scrutinize how donations are spent, organizations that claim to champion social causes are under increased pressure to prove their integrity.

Yachty’s words cut through the noise with brutal honesty. Whether people agree with him or not, one thing is clear—BLM’s leadership has serious questions to answer, and many are no longer willing to blindly accept excuses.
