The upcoming film, May December, directed by Todd Haynes, presents an official trailer that delves into a twisted personal drama, drawing parallels to the real-life scandal involving Mary Kay Letourneau, a former teacher, and her 13-year-old student, Vili Fualaau.
The film features Natalie Portman playing the role of Elizabeth Berry, an actress who visits Maine to spend time with the actual person she will be acting as in an upcoming movie. This person is a former teacher who gained attention in the media for her involvement with a teenage student, resulting in a tarnished reputation.
Julianne Moore portrays Gracie Atherton-Yoo, the teacher who has married and had children with Joe Yoo (played by Charles Melton), her former student who is now an adult. Gracie gave birth to one of their children while she was incarcerated for her crimes committed against Joe when he was still a minor.
“It’s like things have just settled down, and now you’re all making a movie,” Gracie cautiously tells Elizabeth in the trailer.
From that point on, things start to unravel as Gracie develops resentment towards Elizabeth’s presence in their lives and the old emotions that she wants them to confront.
“Why can’t we talk about it, if we’re as in love as we say we are?” Joe tearfully asks Gracie in one emotional scene.
The film features D.W. Moffett, Piper Curda, Elizabeth Yu, Gabriel Chung, Cory Michael Smith, and Lawrence Arancio in addition to its main cast.
The premiere of May December will be on Netflix on November 17th.
