The R-rated comedy “One of Them Days,” starring Keke Palmer and SZA, made a notable impact at the North American box office during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
The film earned $11.6 million over the traditional three-day weekend and is projected to reach $14 million by the end of the four-day holiday period, effectively recouping its $14 million production budget.
Directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton, “One of Them Days” features Palmer and SZA as friends and roommates striving to gather rent money to avoid eviction.
The film has received positive reviews, holding a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Notably, it is the first Black female-led theatrical comedy since 2017’s “Girls Trip.”
Despite the film’s success, the overall box office performance during the holiday weekend was subdued. Total earnings for the three-day period are expected to be less than $80 million, marking one of the lowest-grossing Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekends since 1997.
“One of Them Days” narrowly edged out Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King,” which earned $11.5 million over the weekend.
However, “Mufasa” is anticipated to surpass “One of Them Days” by Monday. Other top performers included the horror film “Wolf Man,” debuting with $10.6 million, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” with $8.6 million, and “Den of Thieves 2” with $6.6 million.
