Peacock has released the official trailer for its upcoming comedy series Laid, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most delightfully twisted rom-coms of the year. Starring Oscar-nominated actress Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Zosia Mamet (Girls), Laid takes the traditional romantic comedy formula and gives it a bloody, suspenseful twist. The series will bow on December 19, 2024, with all eight half-hour episodes available to binge on day one.
The series revolves around Ruby, played by Stephanie Hsu, whose love life becomes surreal and macabre when she finds her former lovers mysteriously dying in weird and horrible ways. In order to save future victims possibly herself-Ruby must revisit her romantic past. With her best friend AJ, played by Zosia Mamet, she creates a “sex timeline” that helps her track down all of her exes, including flings she barely remembers, such as “Green Day Shirt.” Together, they must warn these doomed lovers of their impending deaths.
While Laid promises plenty of laughs and awkward encounters, co-showrunners Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna make sure it’s anything but your typical rom-com. “We wanted something optimistic and heartwarming, but also suspenseful, bloody, and darkly comedic,” says Khan and McKenna in a statement. “The premise—a woman whose exes are dying—felt like the perfect blend of chaos and romance for the times we live in.
Laid boasts an incredible lineup of stars and guest appearances. The list of the principal cast members includes Michael Angarano of This Is Us, and Tommy Martinez of Good Trouble, among many others. Key guest stars to join the series include Simu Liu from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Kate Berlant from A League of Their Own, Alexandra Shipp from Tick, Tick… Boom!, John Early from Search Party, and Olivia Holt from Cruel Summer. Finneas O’Connell, Chloe Fineman (Saturday Night Live), and Ettore “Big E” Ewen also star in the series.
With Stephanie Hsu as both lead and executive producer, and Khan and McKenna at the creative helm, the show is further supported by powerhouse production teams at Universal Television, Davis Entertainment, and Porchlight Films.
Laid mocks rom-com clichés but indulges in them, too. “We wanted to bring back that old-school swelling music, kisses-in-the-rain kind of romance,” said Khan and McKenna. “But with the chaos of death and blood mixed in. Because, really, isn’t that what love feels like?
The quirky, yet dark trailer showcases Ruby’s hilariously uncomfortable confrontations with her exes, balanced by moments of hearty self-discovery. From awkward laughs to sinister twists, it promises to keep audiences guessing-and cringing-until the very end.
Mark your calendars! Laid will be premiering on Peacock this Thursday, December 19, 2024. All eight episodes will be available for streaming, making this the perfect binge for the holiday season.
Well, buckle up for one unique love story: a twisted, dark, laugh-out-loud tale that might make you rethink that right swipe in dating apps.
