R&B songwriter and vocalist MODLEE returns with infectious new single “SOUL URGE”, the title track from her newly released album. With roots in Quebec and Jamaica, and having often travelled between Quebec and the United States, MODLEE has been greatly influenced by jazz, soul, R&B, gospel and reggae, all of which are captured within her unique sound.
Having appeared as a guest vocalist on a number of tracks with artists including Alaclair Ensemble, KNLO and Eman, it’s clear MODLEE is a talented vocalist with a lot to offer. With previous well-received releases Sunwalk (released via Soulection), Analog Love and Queendom, MODLEE has established herself as one to watch, something which she is now capitalising on with her new music, already gaining a spot on the lineup at this year’s Montreal International Jazz Festival.
Working closely with producer Vlooper, “SOUL URGE” captures MODLEE at her best: infectiously danceable, subtly experimental, catchy and reassuringly warming. Blending a swinging beat with deep bass, subtle layers of synths and MODLEE’s velvety vocals, the track possesses an otherworldly quality allowing it to be both commercially viable and musically complex at the same time.
Speaking more about “SOUL URGE”, MODLEE says, “I wanted to create what I call a soulful banger. This song took a little time to find the right sonics to fit the lyrics though. We wanted to give it a feel of live instruments but at the same time with some tight produced drums so we could play it in the club.”
The title track from the new album, “SOUL URGE” sets the scene for an album full of both hip-hop and electro influences that come together with MODLEE’s R&B tendencies to capture a fascinating sonic experience.
