Karen Huger, renowned as the “Grande Dame” of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Potomac” (RHOP), has entered a private rehabilitation program for alcohol dependency, according to People Magazine. This decision coincides with her absence from the Season 9 reunion taping, which took place today.
Huger’s manager, Ryan Tresdale, released a statement explaining her absence: “Karen made the important decision to enter a private recovery program, so was unable to attend the reunion taping today. She was fully supported in this choice. We stand behind Karen as she embarks on this meaningful journey and are proud of her for taking such a significant step forward in her personal growth.”
This development follows Huger’s recent legal troubles. In December 2024, she was found guilty of driving under the influence (DUI) and several related charges stemming from a March 2024 incident in Potomac, Maryland. The charges included negligent driving and reckless driving, though she was acquitted of the reckless driving charge. The incident involved a single-vehicle collision where Huger crossed a median and struck street signs; fortunately, she was not injured.
Bodycam footage from the arrest revealed Huger’s erratic behavior and statements, including referring to herself as “Thomas Jefferson’s concubine” and admitting to being “lit.” Her husband, Ray Huger, was present during the police interrogation and attempted to assist her.
Huger’s legal team has expressed disappointment with the jury’s verdict and plans to appeal. Her sentencing is scheduled for January 29, 2025, where she could face up to two years in prison.
The RHOP community has had mixed reactions to Huger’s situation. Co-stars Gizelle Bryant and Robyn Dixon discussed the arrest on their “Reasonably Shady” podcast, making light of the situation despite its serious nature.
Huger’s decision to enter rehab has been met with support from her management and some fans, who commend her for taking steps toward personal growth. However, others question the timing, suggesting it may be a strategic move ahead of her sentencing.
As a prominent figure on RHOP since its inception in 2016, Huger’s absence from the reunion marks a significant moment in the show’s history. Bravo has not commented on how her absence will impact the reunion or her future on the series.
