Mychal Threets, the supervising librarian at Fairfield Civic Center Library in Solano County, made a poignant announcement on Friday about his plan to step away from his position on March 1st. Threets, who is well-known for his promotion of literacy, friendliness, and happiness, as well as boosting mental health awareness, thanked the Solano County Library in a heartfelt video posted online.

In his farewell speech, Threets reflected on his journey from library fan to supervising the very institution that nurtured his love of books. With a sad heart, he stated the fundamental reason for his departure: to prioritize his mental well-being and collaborate with his mental health support team.

Threets’ influence extended beyond the limits of his library, resonating deeply in the digital environment. His motivating films, which were shared on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, attracted a committed following of more than 1.4 million eager fans.

His crusade for mental health, mixed with messages of optimism and empathy, received coverage in renowned media such as the New York Times, and the Washington Post. Last year, he won one of the American Library Association’s top public service awards, demonstrating his consistent commitment.

Throughout his tenure, Threets freely discussed his difficulties with mental illness, hoping to de-stigmatize the topic. He stressed libraries as sanctuaries, providing consolation and refuge to those experiencing inner anguish. Reflecting on his personal struggles, Threets emphasized the importance of modest actions in improving someone’s day, highlighting the critical function of human connection.

Despite leaving his full-time job, Threets has dreams for larger advocacy efforts, such as advocating literacy on a national scale. He expressed his intention to champion the cause before Congress and pledged to continue supporting libraries worldwide, acknowledging the critical role they serve in cultivating knowledge and community.

While resigning from his current position, Threets hinted to future engagements with Bay Area libraries, implying a possible return in a new capacity. He expressed his deepest gratitude to his loyal patrons, young and old, and promised them of his continuous presence in the library community.
