The Indiana Fever and guard Sophie Cunningham have agreed to terms on a new contract ahead of the 2026 WNBA season.

Cunningham rejoins the Fever for the upcoming season after a brief stint with the franchise following a trade from the Phoenix Mercury on February 1, 2025. It’s good to have her back for another season. The Fever needs players like Cunningham to be successful.

Despite seeing action in just 30 games due to injuries, Cunningham was Indiana’s fourth-leading scorer with 257 points and rebounder with 105 boards. Moreover, she shot an impressive 43.2% from long range, ranking third in the league. No, it’s not just a role player anymore. This woman is a weapon.

“We are thrilled to have Sophie back with the Fever and are grateful for her commitment to return and build on what we started a year ago. Not only is Sophie one of the best three-point shooters in the league, but she is an exceptional teammate, both on and off the court.”

-Amber Cox, COO and General Manager of Indiana Fever

Speaking of which, Cox highlighted Cunningham’s energy that not only inspires the team but also the Fever fans. And yes, if you watch her play, you know what she is talking about.

Cunningham was an important part of Indiana’s run to the 2025 Commissioner’s Cup championship, marking the franchise’s first victory since the 2015 season. During the title game, she recorded 13 points and seven rebounds for the team. Seven rebounds! From a guard! She can do anything on the court.

One of her best games for the Fever last season took place on July 11 against the Atlanta Dream when she recorded her second-ever double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds in the victory by a score of 99-82.

“We had a really special group last year, and it was an incredible first season for me in Indy; I loved everything about my teammates and the Fever organization. We fought through a ton of adversity, and it was important to me that we have a chance to see through what we started. I have a feeling this is going to be another special season, so I’m excited to get things started and to, of course, keep playing in front of the best fans in the WNBA. Let’s get spicy!”

-Sophie Cunningham, Guard of Indiana Fever

So yeah, let’s get spicy. That’s exactly why everyone loves her.

Prior to joining Indiana, Cunningham played six seasons for the Mercury, appearing in 182 games. In her career with Phoenix, she shot 42.2% from the field and 36.2% from long distance. But there is no denying that she became another player once she was traded to the Fever. Her 43.2% shooting from beyond the arc last season proved it.

Next season, Indiana will kick off the 2026 WNBA campaign. Last season laid the foundation for the Fever, while the upcoming season should see this team become a title threat.
