Netflix and The Pokémon Company unveiled their latest venture – Pokémon Concierge. The enchanting series introduces viewers to Haru, a novice concierge navigating the world of Pokémon alongside seasoned colleagues. Beyond its captivating storyline, the show distinguishes itself by employing stop-motion animation, a first for the Pokémon universe.
Dwarf Studios, recognized for their ingenuity, brought beloved Pokémon to life in ways previously unseen. Tadahiro Uesugi, the Annie Award-winning artist behind the Pokémon Resort’s concept design and characters like Haru, aimed to infuse an element of surprise into the Pokémon world. Uesugi expressed, “We wanted people to actually see it and say, ‘That looks fun.'”
Adding depth to the narrative, the production team meticulously crafted every detail, including the human characters’ facial expressions. Uesugi’s design philosophy extended to Haru and others, resulting in 30 distinct facial expressions, enriching the characters’ emotional spectrum.
Director Iku Ogawa focused on the nuances of movement, from Psyduck’s endearing waddle to Haru’s energetic running. By refining character details from the script, Ogawa achieved a level of realism that enhances the make-believe world Pokémon Concierge inhabits.
Eagle-eyed Pokémon enthusiasts will delight in discovering familiar design elements scattered throughout the Pokémon Resort. Ogawa encourages repeated viewings, noting, “We included details in the background so you can find something new every time you watch. I hope you’ll watch it over and over.”
Pokémon Concierge, an animated masterpiece, is now available exclusively on Netflix. Embark on a journey of adventure, friendship, and self-discovery as Haru tends to her Pokémon guests in this visually stunning and emotionally resonant series.
