While more than 150,000 residents have been evacuated due to devastating wildfires that have torn through over 150 square kilometers of Los Angeles, fears of arson have heightened. Whitney Cummings, a comedian residing in the affected area, has been vocal about these fears, sharing her personal experiences and observations.

Cummings reported receiving alarming text messages indicating that individuals were attempting to “put gasoline in sewers,” suggesting coordinated efforts to exacerbate the fires. She also mentioned that her neighbors apprehended a person allegedly setting additional fires on the hillside behind their properties. Expressing her frustration, Cummings stated, “It’s happening all over,” implying that such incidents are widespread.

Among those threats, Cummings patrolled her neighborhood armed with wooden swords to discourage arsonists; she even used social media to show what she was doing and raise awareness of residents about being vigilant.

Authorities have arrested several people suspected of arson in connection with the wildfires. One man was taken into custody near the Kenneth Fire after neighbors reported seeing him trying to ignite a fire with a “propane tank or flamethrower.” Police later said they lacked probable cause to book him on an arson charge.

In another incident, a 60-year-old woman identified as Gloria Lynn Mandich was booked for felony arson after she set a brush fire near Leo Carrillo State Park. Authorities said this incident was unrelated to the larger wildfires affecting the area.

The LAFD has been criticized for its hiring practices during this crisis. Cummings criticized the department for focusing on diversity initiatives, questioning the prioritization of such efforts amid the wildfire emergency.

As the situation develops, residents are advised to be on the lookout for any suspicious activities and report them to the authorities. The cause of several fires remains under investigation with officials working hard to contain the blaze and ensure public safety.
