Why Aren’t Gregory and Travis McMichaels Still Not In Jail After Killing Ahmaud Arbery In February?

Ahmaud Arbery was shot and killed in February after two men confronted him while he was running through a neighborhood in Brunswick, in Glynn County. Shortly after a video allegedly showing the incident surfaced online, Tom Durden, a Georgia district attorney, released a statement recommending the case be presented to the grand jury of Glynn County “for consideration of criminal charges against those involved” in Arbery’s death. There have been no charges against the father and son involved in the shooting, who said they suspected Arbery was a burglar.

“According to a police report, one of the men, Gregory McMichael, said that he saw Mr. Arbery running through his neighborhood and thought that he looked like the suspect in a rash of nearby break-ins. Mr. McMichael, 64, told the authorities that he and his son, Travis McMichael, 34, armed themselves and began chasing him in a truck.” – NYT

“Tom Durden, the district attorney for the Atlantic Judicial Circuit, wrote he expects to present the case to the next available grand jury in Glynn County to consider whether charges are merited for those involved in Arbery’s death.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, courts are currently prohibited from empaneling grand juries.” – CNN

The attorney representing the family says Arbery was not armed and was not in possession of stolen material. He said the worst that can be said is that he allegedly stopped at a home that was under construction to look through a window.

Attorney Lee Merritt, who represents Arberys mother, claims “The series of events captured in this video confirm what all the evidence indicated prior to its release— Ahmaud Arbery was pursued by three white men that targeted him solely because of his race and murdered him.

There’s no evidence, presented publicly thus far, that suggests the deceased was a suspect in a burglary. Which wouldn’t matter anyway because these men had no reason to end his life. They had no evidence or proof he was burglar. The best they could have done was a citizen arrest but no they killed him for no reason at all. The men who killed Arbery are not in jail right now because the district attorney is, arguably, passing the buck to a grand jury to let them make the decision.
