Why Maïmouna Doucouré Film “Cuties” Will Make A Lot of Noise When It Release on Netflix?

Maimouna Doucouré’s brilliant debut feature, Cuties, is a beautiful intersection of a heartfelt coming of age story and a poignant struggle with family tradition and religion. Certainly be on the look out for this when it hits Netflix, this is going to be big.

Cuties, follows 11-year-old Amy (Fathia Youssouf Abdillahi) who joins a group of dancers, “the cuties,” at school. There she rapidly grows aware of her burgeoning femininity, a discovery contrary to her mother’s values.

Maïmouna Doucouré captures tween over-sexualization well. It’s at times uncomfortable, but it gets it point across. I’m going to be thinking about this one for awhile.

This film is a lot but because it explores the pre teen growth experience from a place of realness and the images that are fed to our children.
