Netflix just picked up its first animated show from Africa and is hiring a team of female writers from across the continent to work on it.

The show — “Mama K’s Team 4” — was created by Zambian writer Malenga Mulendema and is about 4 teenage superheroes.

The series has been illustrated by Cameroonian Malcolm Wope, who says he has been inspired by ’90s R&B and female hip hop groups.

“In addition to giving African writers a global platform on which to be heard, we are excited to present this powerful and entertaining new animated series that brings Malenga’s incredible and unique vision to life on Netflix,” Melissa Cobb, the vice president of original animation at Netflix, said in a statement.

She added: “Mama K’s Team 4 has the potential to give a whole new generation of African children the opportunity to see themselves on-screen in the powerful, aspirational characters they look up to.”
