A 20-year-old college student accused of killing her newborn baby was released from jail after posting a $250,000 bail, say investigators.

Anne Mae Demegillo was arrested on March 6th on a charge of child endangerment after allegedly allowing her newborn baby to drown in a toilet bowl.

Anonymous Tip Leads to Investigation

The case against Demegillo started when an anonymous caller contacted the police and told them that Demegillo had told them that she had given birth to a baby and had allowed it to drown in a toilet bowl.

The police arrested Demegillo on a charge of child endangerment after they said that Demegillo gave birth to her baby around 2 a.m. She then cleaned up the blood that was on her bathroom floor, unaware that her newborn baby was in the toilet bowl, gasping for air.

When questioned by police, Demegillo was asked if she had wanted her newborn baby to die, to which Demegillo allegedly replied, “A little bit.”

Demegillo also told police that she did not know that she was pregnant until she gave birth.

Medical Examiner Details

The baby was determined to weigh around 3 pounds, 6 ounces, say medical examiners.

The detectives who questioned Demegillo say she showed no signs of remorse during the questioning.

Release Conditions

Anne Mae Demegillo was released after posting $250,000 bail. The terms of her release are that Demegillo must wear a GPS tracking device, not have contact with any minor or with the anonymous caller who reported her, and turn over her passport.

After her release, Demegillo was seen smiling as she ran towards a waiting car outside the jail.
