According to multiple reports, at least eight people have died as result of Friday morning’s shooting at Texas’ Santa Fe High School.

The school’s assistant principal Cris Richardson told reporters that a suspect has been arrested. A second person has also been detained as well, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on Twitter.

The gunman opened fire inside the school at about 7:45 a.m., around the time school was about to start for the day, according to Joe Giusti, a Galveston County commissioner. One student told KTRK, a Houston TV station, that the gunman entered her art class and began shooting. She said she could not identify the shooter because she was in a hurry to escape the classroom.

However, the student did say that she saw one girl with blood on her leg as the class evacuated the room.

“We thought it was a fire drill at first but really, the teacher said, ‘Start running,’” the student told the television station.

School officials said law enforcement officers were working to secure the building “and initiate all emergency management protocols to release and move students to another location.” The students from the high school were being transported to another location to reunite with their family members.

“What we do know is that we did have an active shooter in the building and that person has been arrested and secured,” Assistant Principal Chris Richardson told reporters. “We hope the worst is over,” Assistant Principal Cris Richardson said.

A moment ago, President Trump spoke out on the recent incident. He tweeted,

Trump also spoke at an unrelated event, and spoke about the shooting at Santa Fe High School.

He said shootings like today’s have “been going on too long in our country” and said his administration was “determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools, and to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves, and to others.”

The name of the suspects or victims have not been released yet. We will continue to keep you updated.
