A TikToker @lyssdvo is asking her followers whether people are meant to stay with one partner for their entire lives. That question has already made the creator reconsider her plans to get married and have children.

“What if we’re not meant for monogamy? I genuinely welcome any and all thoughts on this,” @lyssdvo stated in the video.

The creator has been dreaming of a typical life: marriage and family.

“I’ve literally always been a subscriber to, like, the traditional life of, like, I wanna get married, have kids,” @lyssdvo said. “Like, I grew up that way, and I like, have genuinely, like, biologically and emotionally, intellectually wanted that for myself, like for most of my life.”

Now those plans are put side by side with another concept of a happy life.

“But I’m also have belief that life is about human connection,” @lyssdvo said. “And so now my brain is breaking because I’m like, what if, like, choosing one person and being with them forever is actually like going against our life purpose of, like, connecting with people?”

The creator notes that the issue isn’t the number of people you connect with.

“And I don’t think like, the purpose in life is to connect with like, as many people as possible,” @lyssdvo said. “Like, I don’t think it’s a numbers game, but like, I do think it’s about, like, experiences and connection, like I said. So I’m just like, is this just a societal made construct, and like, actually it’s not the move?”

However, commitment to one person brings some unique experiences others cannot have.

“The one or two things that are a saving grace for this societal construct for me is that I do think that, like, if you didn’t just commit to one person and, like, build a life with someone, you would never uncover how deep a connection could be,” @lyssdvo said. “I think if you, like, never got to that level with someone, like, you could never reach that just in, like, meeting and interacting with other people throughout your life.”

Having children is another reason why the creator still wants to stick to the traditional model.

“And then also I do like the idea of, like, having kids with one person and then, like, being a familial unit,” @lyssdvo said. “So I don’t know how you would combat that or, like, keep that without, like, being married and having a monogamous relationship.”

The creator did not pick an option in the video and turned to the viewers.

“But anyways, I’m just, like, ruminating on this on my mind, and I want to know what other people have to say about this, ’cause I can’t be the only one that’s, like, thinking about this,” @lyssdvo stated.
