On Thursday, Apple TV unveiled the first look at “Imperfect Women,” a glossy psychological thriller series led and executive-produced by Emmy Award-winners Elisabeth Moss and Kerry Washington. Annie Weisman is the creator of the project. This will be an eight-part thriller that is aimed at being one of the primary offerings of the female-led quality content on Apple TV.

A Friendship Betrayed by Crime

Based on Araminta Hall’s novel of the same title, “Imperfect Women” follows a crime that unravels an enduring friendship among three women. The story exposes buried resentments, concealed lies, and the harsh truth that sometimes closeness fails to promote honesty.

It starts as an investigation and then becomes something much more hurtful as the women are forced to face the path they themselves took to have their lives altered. Guilt and revenge are intertwined with love and loyalty as the true secrets of even the strongest of love stories lie in this book.

The series is an “unconventional thriller,” according to Apple TV, as it relies on psychological suspense rather than simplistic explanations. “The mystery here isn’t merely who carried out the act,” it states. “It’s also who these women are when they turn their gaze inward.”

Prestige-worthy Casting

Moss is renowned for her work in The Handmaid’s Tale, Shining Girls, and Mad Men. Washington is celebrated for her work in Scandal, Little Fires Everywhere, and UnPrisoned. They not only excel with their acting but also with the quality of the projects they produce.

A large ensemble of other stars also accompanies the two. The list of actors includes Kate Mara, Joel Kinnaman, Corey Stoll, Leslie Odom Jr., Audrey Zahn, Jill Wagner, Rome Flynn, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Violette Linnz, Indiana Elle, Jackson Kelly, Keith Carradine, Ana Ortiz, and Wilson Bethel.

The fact that the supporting cast is so strong means that “Imperfect Women” is no mere two-person show and that each character has a purpose to play.

A Creative Team with Real Credentials

Weisman is the showrunner of her latest project with Apple TV, having previously worked on the acclaimed dramedy Physical. Weisman has a knack for striking an outstanding balance between her characters and the emotional drama, which should translate well to a show like “Imperfect Women” that explores moral dilemmas in a novel way.

The series is executive-produced by Moss, along with Lindsey McManus of Love & Squalor Pictures, who initially optioned the book. Washington executive produces for Simpson Street Productions alongside Pilar Savone. Hall is also an executive producer, along with writer Kay Oyegun.

Noted director Lesli Linka Glatter, known for Homeland and Love & Death, directs and executive produces the first episode, setting up the tone of the series.

“Imperfect Women” will premiere on March 18th, with the first two episodes dropping simultaneously. The episodes will then continue to roll out each Wednesday through April 29, keeping the conversation flowing as the story unfolds.
