A Brilliant Sequel! Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the thrilling second installment in Miles Morales’ Spider-Verse story, is back and bigger and better than ever!
After Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) reunites with Gwen Stacy, Ghost-Spider (Hailee Steinfeld) is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he meets a diverse team of Spider-People tasked with protecting the Multiverse. But when the heroes disagree on how to deal with a threat, Miles is forced to make a difficult choice in order to save the people he cares about the most. Anyone can wear the Spider mask, but it’s how you wear it that makes you a hero.
The highly anticipated sequel in the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse is set to capture the hearts of audiences worldwide in this thrilling sequel. The story continues in Brooklyn, where returning and new characters take the audience on a nonstop wild adventure from beginning to end.
I spoke with Oscar, Emmy, and Tony nominee Brian Tyree Henry, who plays Miles Morales’ cop father in “Jefferson Davis,” who wants nothing more than to give his son the life he didn’t have. Brian discussed the honor and adventure of being a part of the Marvel universe, as well as what this role means to him. This father/son team would be incomplete without the Davis family matriarch, “Rio Morales,” played by talented actress Luna Lauren Valez.
Luna portrays a nurturing mother who reminds her son “Miles Morales” of his uniqueness. Luna discussed how important it is to see this family represented on screen.”There is no trauma in the Morales household,” says Valez, which is often unheard of when telling Black and Brown stories on screen.
Speaking with Brian and Luna, it was clear that they were ecstatic to be a part of a franchise that valued diverse representation and championed the values of family, love, and belonging. When discussing Across The Spider-Verse, they express how important their roles and the film are to not only them, but to the audience who watches the film and sees themselves reflected.
Brian and Luna expressed their gratitude for being a part of a project that not only entertained but also challenged traditional superhero narratives. The second installment delves into family dynamics, love, and the power of one’s individuality.
The film emphasizes the importance of young viewers seeing superheroes who look like them, breaking down barriers and instilling a sense of empowerment. The film has become a beacon of hope, inspiring a new generation of aspiring superheroes by showcasing a diverse range of backgrounds, ethnicities, and experiences. The film not only gives these characters a chance to shine, but it also serves as a platform for amplifying and elevating underrepresented voices.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has become an agent of transformation by embracing diversity and inclusion, inspiring audiences to embrace their own powers and make a positive impact in the world.
Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson direct Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which is based on Marvel Comics and has a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham. The film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hits theaters on June 2, 2023.
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, “A Thousand and One” explores the complex journey of Inez, played by Teyana Taylor, as she navigates the changing city of New York while balancing motherhood, a secret, and love.
This coming-of-age story is the first feature for writer/director A.V. Rockwell, and she leaves no stone unturned. Like Inez, A.V. Is also from New York, and you can tell by how she captures an early 90s-mid 2000’s city with depth and care. Shot during the pandemic and on a tight budget, A.V. still manages to take the viewer on an immersive experience through the characters and their story.
Teyana Taylor captures Inez unlike anyone else could; she has all the elements of the role down to the New York accent. We see her in a way we aren’t used to seeing her on screen; she’s not dancing, singing, or making you laugh. Quite the contrary, she’s pulling on your heartstrings, pulling you in, and making you look within yourself through the lens of Inez.
During the press day for the film, I spoke to both Teyana and A.V. about the movie. We talked about the choice to tell this story and what it was like tapping into the role of Inez.
A.V. talks about how Black women always show up for everyone, but who shows up for us? This theme is explored throughout the film and makes you question the world around us, why are Black women consistently and historically neglected?
“A Thousand And One” opens the door for much-needed dialogue around a mirage of societal issues that affect the Black community.
Will Catlett, Josiah Cross, Aven Courtney, and Aaron Kingsley Adetola round out the cast, and produced by Eddie Vaisman (p.g.a), Julia Lebedev (p.g.a), Lena Waithe, Rishi Rajani, Brad Weston, Oren Moverman, and Jamin O’Brien serve as an executive producer of the film.
A Thousand and One premieres only in theaters nationwide on Friday, March 31, 2023.
If you’re like me, then you’re likely a member of Beyoncé’s “Beyhive”…which means you likely stay in the know when it comes to anything Beyoncé is dropping! Like when she announced Renaissance tour dates or those visuals we’re still waiting on. Nonetheless, fans go hard for their fav’s, we see it play out on social media every day. Swarm takes a deeper and more sinister look into fandom. Leaving you asking yourself, just how far is too far when it comes to our favorite artists?
The Prime Video series shines a killer spotlight on fan culture, which follows a diehard fan and her sister as they STAN their favorite artist, in the worst way.
I spoke to the series stars Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah), who stars as Dre and also serves as a producer, and Chloë Bailey (“Grown-ish”) who plays Marissa about the series, and what viewers can expect, which may surprise you.
Janine Nabers (“Atlanta”) serves as Showrunner, with Donald Glover as Director, Co-Creator, and Producer. The series also includes guest stars Damson Idris (“Snowfall”), Rickey Thompson, Paris Jackson, Rory Culkin, Kiersey Clemons, and Byron Bowers.
Swarm, buzzes onto your screens with all new episodes, on March 17th exclusively on Prime Video.
At only 18 years old, Laila Pruitt is taking Hollywood by storm. Laila currently stars as Nicole Flenory in the Starz hit “BMF,” with a season 3 renewal just announced. She has no plans of slowing down. The Howard University student is balancing school and a blossoming acting career with intention and self-care.
She has plans to direct films. Laila wants to work with Viola Davis, LaKeith Stanfield, and more. I caught up with Laila to discuss how she got her start in acting, working on BMF, her plans for directing, and how she balances it all.
