During a guest appearance on Monday’s episode of Watch What Happens Live, Charli XCX addressed rumors surrounding the creation of a potential new album for pop icon Britney Spears.
The English singer-songwriter reluctantly confirmed the speculation when a fan called into the talk show seeking clarification on the matter.
“Um, so. Well, yes, but, it leaked to the press,” Charli confessed. “Britney then did this post where she was like, ‘I don’t have random people write for me.’ I was like, okay, go off! So I don’t know that she was part of the process.”
Despite Britney’s previous denial of the rumors, Charli revealed that she had indeed been approached to write music for the pop star. “Maybe her team was looking for—,” suggested host Andy Cohen, before Charli interjected, explaining, “Her team was running before they could walk. Britney probably has a load of other projects that she’s focusing on. So I did get asked but I don’t know if it’s like, real.”
When pressed further by Cohen, Charli confirmed that she had written songs with hopes that Britney would record them, emphasizing her admiration for the pop princess and expressing that having Britney record one of her songs “would be a dream come true.”
Despite Britney’s previous social media post seeming dismissive of the rumors, Charli maintains her admiration for the “Toxic” singer, stating, “I love her.”
The confusion continued as Cohen suggested that Britney’s reference to “random people” may not have been directed at Charli, indicating that there are numerous individuals in the industry. This was in response to Britney’s January Instagram post where she vehemently denied rumors about her return to the music industry.
Charli, however, expressed uncertainty regarding whether Britney had even been made aware of the potential new music.
