A trailer for the English dub of the animated feature Witch on the Holy Night dropped on Tuesday, revealing the theme song ahead of the film’s release in theaters in the U.S. and Canada on January 29, 2027.

The film is being distributed by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment, with ufotable as the animators, the same studio behind the hit “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle.” The film will show in Japanese with English subtitles and in an English-dubbed version.

The trailer introduces viewers to Yoru to Ao (Night and Blue), the latest song by the Japanese musical unit supercell. The song was written, composed, and arranged by ryo, with Nagi Yanagi providing the lead vocals.

This marks a reunion of sorts for Supercell. The band has performed Hoshi ga Matataku Konna Yoru ni, which was used as the ending theme for the original Witch on the Holy Night game, and Yoru to Ao is Yanagi’s first new Supercell song in about 15 years. Speaking about the song, ryo says Supercell would have been inactive without this project.

The final trailer in Japanese, released on September 30, was about 90 seconds long and previewed the song alongside footage featuring the film’s three lead characters.

According to the official synopsis, Aoko Aozaki is an ordinary-looking high school student who is actually a Magician living in the present day, but is only an apprentice. She lives in the same house as Alice Kuonji to become a real Magician. Then she meets a boy and launches what the distributors call the witch story.

The film is based on the visual novel Mahotsukai no Yoru by Type-Moon and was written by Kinoko Nasu. It was released in Japan for PC in 2012 and began development in 1996. The story takes place in the late 1980s and focuses on an old mansion on a hill, where a witch is rumored to reside.

Kinoko Nasu’s early work laid the foundation for two of his most famous works, Tsukihime and Fate/stay night. Aoko first appeared in Tsukihime in 2000, and her sister Touko is one of the most important characters in The Garden of Sinners, which ufotable also adapted into a film.

A remastered and fully voiced version of the game was released on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in December 2022, with Steam getting it in December 2023. The smartphone versions were also released in Japan on November 20, and Crunchyroll Game Vault plans to include the game next year.

ufotable created the film, with Masaru Takeuchi as director and Hikaru Kondo as chief director. Moe Tsuzuki created the character designs, and Hideyuki Fukasawa, the composer of the original game, composed the movie music.

Haruka Tomatsu voices Aoko, while Kana Hanazawa voices Alice, and Yusuke Kobayashi voices Soujyuro Sizuki, the boy who enters their lives. All three actors voiced the characters in the game’s 2022 remaster.

The studio’s 2025 feature “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle” premiered to $70 million in the U.S. and Canada, marking the largest debut of an anime film, according to studio estimates. It earned over $738 million globally, surpassing any other anime film, and won Best Animated Film at the 49th Japan Academy Film Prize.

“Witch on the Holy Night” premieres in 347 theatres in Japan on November 20, with Toho and Aniplex distributing it. Crunchyroll and Sony will also release the film in over 45 countries and regions between January 21 and February 5, 2027.
