A celebration turned to tragedy this week after a 14-year-old girl drowned in the Detroit River while trying to save her younger cousin, according to the girl’s father.

Glenn Bradley said his family was attending a graduation party at Maheras-Gentry Park when his daughter, Aamina Bradley, and her 9-year-old cousin went near the water. Bradley said the cousin fell into the river, prompting Aamina to jump in after her immediately.

Bystanders pulled the 9-year-old cousin from the water, Bradley said, but Aamina went under and did not resurface.

Bradley said he also entered the river in an attempt to reach his daughter but was unable to save her.

“Her last words were ‘Dad, help me,’ she looked at me,” Bradley told WXYZ Channel 7. “When I went out there, she disappeared; she went under and never came back up. Somebody had to save me because I was drowning.”

Detroit police confirmed that Aamina’s body was later recovered from the river.

Bradley said the loss has been devastating for the family.

“Everybody tore up but they maintaining,” he said.

He urged others to appreciate their loved ones.

“The people you love, you have to cherish them because you never know,” Bradley said. “At the end of the day, my daughter, she was a warrior, she had a beautiful heart. She had the most beautiful smile.”
