Marvel Studios has a golden opportunity, and fans are eager to learn what’s next.
Fans are predicting who will play Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat, in the MCU. One of the leading names is Indie Navarrette, a 25-year-old breakthrough star of the horror movie “Obsession.”
And fans may be on to something.
From meme queen to scream queen: an unexpected success story
Navarrette was born on March 3, 2001, in Tucson, Arizona. It was a slow career start for her: a minor part in Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why,” four seasons as Sarah Cushing on The CW’s “Superman & Lois,” and a minor character alongside Dave Bautista in “Trap House.”
Then came “Obsession.”
Her performance as Nikki Freeman, a girl cursed to become a stalker and an obsession, became a huge cultural phenomenon. Critics praised her acting. Guy Lodge of Variety mentioned how great Navarrette handled a difficult horror part, and there was even awards talk. Her crazy facial expressions resulted in numerous memes. Navarrette went from “Sarah from Superman & Lois” to “Who is she?” quite quickly.
“I wanted her to feel like a girl,” Navarrette explained to Cosmopolitan when talking about her performance as Nikki. This approach, bringing humanity into the crazy, is exactly what Felicia Hardy needs.
The catsuit looks good on her, and we have facts to prove it
The Black Cat role is tricky. Felicia Hardy is a thief, a seductress, a troublemaker and, in certain versions, one of the greatest distractions for Spider-Man. An actress needs to be charming and intimidating at the same time so the viewer would cheer for somebody who is stealing from them.
Luckily for the MCU, Navarrette can already handle the task. In “Obsession,” she shows how quickly a character can shift from sweet to menacing, and viewers love her performance. As Primetimer notes, the fans of Navarrette as Black Cat appreciate this range exactly because it’s needed to perform as Felicia Hardy in the live-action.
Here is an interesting fact: Navarrette used to be a Twitch streamer and studies human behavioral psychology. A gamer with knowledge of psychology? It is literally the whole skill set of Felicia Hardy without the grappling hook.
She is already close to the superhero world. Four seasons in the Superman universe mean that Navarrette already knows what the comic book universe looks like, how it feels to be on the wire rig, and how mid-season cliffhangers should look. Transition from House of El to House of Ideas would be a perfect cat jump.
The stars (and the Internet) are aligning
Interest in Black Cat has grown for years. Felicity Jones played Felicia in 2014’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” but never managed to put on a Black Cat suit. Since then, lots of young actresses (Sydney Sweeney, Anya Taylor-Joy, Mikey Madison) have been fan favorites, and rumors about Sadie Sink playing the character in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” keep popping up.
In June, the interest in Black Cat grew even more. People on Threads, Instagram, and Facebook have been asking if Navarrette can be the MCU’s Black Cat, with fan sites mentioning that she has been considered for the role. No announcement from Marvel Studios yet, but fans already started the audition process for her, complete with fan art.
Best of all: Navarrette looks like she is interested. Asked by Nylon if she wants to join the MCU, Navarrette answered: “I would.” As The Hollywood Reporter notes, she recently met with Jake Schreier, the director of Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot. It is clear that she shows interest.
Marvel, it is your decision to make
Marvel often chooses actors on the rise. Navarrette is there already: critically acclaimed, meme-ready, trained for superhero roles, and willing to join the project.
Felicia Hardy has been waiting for a live-action for a long time. The MCU can wait longer, or it can take the risk.
It is up to Marvel. The Internet already made its choice.
