An Australian ex-high school teacher was sentenced to 15 months in jail today for sexually abusing two teenage boys under her guardianship, just a few days before the eight-month period since she pleaded guilty to four charges in the case.

Tayla Lee Brailey, 32, wept and hugged her parents and others supporting her before she was taken into custody at Parramatta District Court in western Sydney, per Yahoo News Australia. She will be eligible for parole on April 24, 2027, as per the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

The betrayal of trust involved when a teacher commits such a crime demands a sentence of imprisonment, as Judge Elizabeth Ryan pointed out, stating, “No penalty other than imprisonment is appropriate.” Ryan also ruled that Brailey be placed on the child protection register of the New South Wales Police for 15 years.

The pleas of guilt by Brailey were filed on March 4 in Campbelltown Local Court to one charge each of sexual intercourse with a person under special care, sexual touching, and two charges of using a carriage service to solicit or transmit child abuse material. Carriage services include phone and internet services in Australia. Three other charges were withdrawn at this hearing, according to ABC at the time.

The sentence of nine months was for the act of intercourse committed with the older boy aged 17, and the 12-month sentence was for the act with the younger boy aged 16, amounting to 15 months. Brailey received good behavior bonds for two charges related to child abuse material, as per Yahoo News Australia.

Brailey’s initial arrest took place at a school in southwest Sydney in August 2024, following an investigation into allegations of sexual touching of the student. She was put on bail but was arrested again within two weeks and charged with offenses involving a second student. As ABC said, the school and students involved in the offenses cannot be named legally.

The offenses took place in July 2024, as per ABC. According to AAP, Brailey added the older student, who was in his last year of schooling, on Snapchat and requested him to keep their contact a secret to avoid trouble. They exchanged pictures, and on a day at school, they met on the street and had sex in his car, and then she went back to work.

It is seen that Brailey approached the younger student via social media, showed him a picture of herself, and asked for an explicit picture in return. It was alleged that she held the boy back at school and indulged in sexual acts with him in a classroom despite his reluctance because she was his teacher and a married woman, as per Illawarra Mercury.

Brailey has been on strict bail for more than two years and is not allowed to enter a school or be around children without a carer, as per The Canberra Times. Her sentencing was originally set for March 26. At the plea hearing, the ABC reported that defense lawyer Abbas Soukie told the court the agreed facts had not yet been filed and that some facts were disputed.

While reading the statement of the impact on the victim, Ryan mentioned that one of the boys had left high school before completing his final year, feeling ashamed. He was disturbed by sleepless nights and flashbacks, losing all school friends, and feeling guilty, as per the ABC and AAP.

The report of a psychologist filed in court stated that Brailey was suffering from bipolar disorder and, at the time of the crime, she was in a manic episode, as per ABC. Yahoo News Australia noted that it was her first such episode and felt “an irresistible impulse” towards sexual acts with the boys.

Ryan accepted the fact that Brailey’s mental condition, which impaired judgment and increased her sex drive, has reduced her moral culpability. However, she noted Brailey had chances to think during this time and tried to avoid being detected, as mentioned by AAP. It was found by her that “She knew what she was doing was wrong, but she persisted with it.”

Brailey had informed the court that she was not attracted to children and considered both boys as adults whom she didn’t want to reject, as per AAP. Ryan found this reason difficult to believe, given that Brailey pursued the younger boy despite his reluctance.

The letters written by Brailey’s relatives informed the court about the losses she suffered due to her crime, which included her marriage, her job as a teacher, and her reputation. According to ABC, Brailey has retrained as an accountant and bookkeeper. According to Yahoo News Australia, Ryan appeared remorseful and is unlikely to repeat the crime.
