When Julia Doyle submitted her audition tapes, she did not know she was going for one of the most talked-about shows on TV in recent years. She portrays Sophia, the being formerly known as the Man in Yellow, in Season 4 of MGM’s “FROM”. Speaking to The Wayne Ayers Podcast, she described how, when submitting for the project, she saw it labeled as “No Exit”.
“I didn’t know any storyline. I didn’t know anything about what the show was actually about,” she added. “They wanted to have a meeting with me, and then they hired me.”
In her view, this lack of knowledge could play to her advantage.
“Sometimes not knowing can kind of help you because it just helps you focus on the character and not the stakes,” she explained. “If I would have been like, ‘Oh, it’s for this character, and it’s a really important character, make sure you get it right,’ I feel like maybe I would not have been as good.”
She Is Not Playing Evil. She Is Playing Fun.
Doyle’s performance of Sophia has become one of the most debated elements of “FROM”. What is more, it is no surprise, since she has to act simultaneously as the manipulative ancient being and the innocent girl possessed by the former. Asked how she approached the character, Doyle immediately ruled out portraying Sophia as a villain.
“If I were to play it as a villain, it’s not the correct headspace for me to be in,” she stated. “When I am doing the things I’m doing, I’m not thinking, ‘Oh, I’m so evil.’ I’m thinking, ‘This is so fun. I’m really enjoying myself. Oh my god, watch them.'”
For Doyle, having to play two characters simultaneously helped her focus more on the enjoyment of acting rather than on the menacing nature of her character. Moreover, her interpretation of Sophia’s actions comes more from intuition than from some premeditated plans.
“When I’m playing the Man in Yellow side, I feel like I have a lot of places I can go that, when I’m playing a character that’s not a monster, I can’t go,” she explained. “I found when I was playing two roles at once, I just loved being able to focus on the scene at hand, but then also have moments when I remember, ‘Oh, I’m acting right now.”
Sophia Always Knows Which Room to Work in
Speaking of how she came up with her character’s actions, Doyle explained that her strategy includes choosing who she interacts with based on their vulnerability. In this regard, Sophia decides to stay with Sara rather than in the colony house because she knows she will not be questioned there.
“My character probably doesn’t want to be questioned by a bunch of people,” she stated. “It’s easier to be caught when you’re surrounded by a bunch of people who want to know things about you versus just one.”
This idea also applies to whom Sophia befriends. For example, Doyle mentioned that her character considers Kenny emotionally vulnerable after his family losses.
“That’s definitely one of the strategies of my character,” she agreed. “Some people are easier to approach.”
As to whether Victor, the town’s resident who has all the information about the situation, poses a danger to Sophia’s strategy, Doyle declined to answer. “You’re asking me questions I’m actually scared of,” she said.
Do Not Sleep on Episode 7
Asked which scene in particular stands out to her among those filmed, Doyle mentioned an early diner scene between her and her co-star, Hannah.
“That was our first scene that we actually interacted with one another,” she said, adding that she prefers scenes with many participants. As for what fans should look forward to, Doyle advised paying attention to Episode 7 while also considering Episodes 8 and 9.
Speaking of Episode 5, which had already aired at the time of the interview, Doyle mentioned she was certain it would be her favorite.
Jordan Peele, Ari Aster, and a Very Specific DC Villain
Asked if there are any directors she dreams of collaborating with, Doyle mentioned that she would love to work with Jordan Peele, Ari Aster, and Greta Gerwig. In particular, she talked about Ari Aster’s short film The Strange Thing About the Johnsons, which she had watched in the fifth grade.
“I thought it was very intriguing, and it was actually linked to Hereditary,” she explained.
Also, Julia Doyle would like to work with Ellen Burstyn and Gal Gadot.
Apart from her acting career, Doyle mentions that she is involved in writing and that she has always had many ideas that run through her head.
“There is always something in my head. If I ever write something, I have to be happy with what I write, but part of me knows that maybe I’m being a perfectionist,” she stated.
As for her dream role, Doyle said she would love to portray Poison Ivy of the DC universe. Besides, she considers the opportunity to participate in SNL extremely attractive, especially given the fear it brings.
Doyle’s top four films are The Truman Show, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Labyrinth, and Rosemary’s Baby.
Season 4 of “FROM” is still on air.
