Urban One, a trailblazing media company, has declared the iconic Mary J. Blige as the Entertainment Icon Honoree at the upcoming “URBAN ONE HONORS: Best in Black” event on February 25, 2024.
Renowned for her multi-platinum albums, nine Grammy Awards, EMMY award, and two Academy Award nominations, Blige is a global superstar who reshaped R&B with her gritty, urban-rooted style.
Influenced by legends like Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan, Blige debuted in 1992 with “What’s the 411?” marking the beginning of a remarkable career. Hits like “You Remind Me” and “Real Love” dominated the charts, while her second album, “My Life,” showcased a more personal side. Blige’s passionate tracks such as “Be Without You,” “No More Drama,” and “Family Affair” have solidified her status as a force in music.
With 15 studio albums and a diverse portfolio in films and television, including notable roles in “Mudbound” and “The Umbrella Academy,” Blige has left an indelible mark. Michelle L. Rice, President of TV One and CLEO TV, expressed excitement about honoring Blige, stating she personifies the “Best in Black” theme.
The star-studded lineup of honorees includes Dionne Warwick, Chlöe, Frankie Beverly, and Donald Lawrence. Performers like Teyana Taylor, and Bebe Winans, and a reunion featuring KeKe Wyatt, Chanté Moore, and Nicci Gilbert promise a memorable event.
Hosted by LeToya Luckett, the “Backstage Pass” will feature exclusive interviews with honorees, performers, and presenters, making “URBAN ONE HONORS” a celebration of excellence and influence in black entertainment.
