Rachel Bilson’s journey to stardom wasn’t a carefully orchestrated master plan. It was the perfect blend of talent, serendipity, and sheer charisma that turned her from a minor guest star into a leading force in one of the most iconic teen dramas of the 2000s.

When The O.C. premiered in 2003, it quickly became a cultural phenomenon, redefining teen television with its mix of drama, romance, and that sun-drenched California cool. And while Marissa Cooper, played by Mischa Barton, and Ryan Atwood, played by Ben McKenzie, were intended to be the show’s primary focus, it was Rachel Bilson’s Summer Roberts, who was originally meant to be a one-off character, who stole the show.

So how did Bilson go from a minor supporting role to one of The O.C.’s most beloved characters? Let’s dive into the story behind her casting, her unexpected rise to stardom, and the undeniable chemistry that made Summer and Seth Cohen, played by Adam Brody, one of TV’s greatest couples.

Rachel Bilson Originally Wanted to Play Marissa Cooper

Believe it or not, Rachel Bilson didn’t initially set her sights on the role of Summer Roberts. Instead, like many young actresses at the time, she had her eye on the leading female role of Marissa Cooper, the wealthy and troubled Newport Beach queen bee.

“I had read the material before I got the audition for Summer, and I was like, ‘I want to read for that part, I loved it,’” Bilson recalled in an interview People Magazine.

But that role ultimately went to Mischa Barton, whose striking presence and enigmatic energy fit the part of Marissa perfectly. Meanwhile, Bilson was invited to read for Summer Roberts, a character that, at the time, was barely more than a sidekick with a few lines.

Summer Roberts Was Never Supposed to Be a Main Character

When The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz and the casting directors first envisioned Summer, she wasn’t meant to be a significant presence in the show. In fact, she was initially written as a shallow, party-girl best friend to Marissa, nothing more than a supporting character to fill out the glamorous world of Newport Beach.

Summer’s role in the pilot episode was minimal, consisting of just a few throwaway lines, including the now-iconic, “I have to pee, do you have to pee?”

But Bilson took those few lines and injected them with such a unique charm and comedic timing that it was impossible to ignore her. There was something about her delivery, sharp, playful, and effortlessly cool, that made Summer feel like more than just a stereotypical mean-girl sidekick.

And the audience noticed.

Rachel Bilson’s Natural Chemistry with Adam Brody Changed Everything

One of the biggest reasons Summer Roberts went from a minor character to a The O.C. staple was her chemistry with Adam Brody, who played the adorably nerdy Seth Cohen.

Initially, Brody himself had auditioned for the role of Ryan Atwood before landing the part of Seth, the comic book-obsessed, quick-witted outcast of Newport Beach. But when Bilson and Brody shared scenes together, something magical happened.

“The more we gave her to do, the more she was really knocking it out of the park,” Schwartz later said, reflecting on Bilson’s growing role in the series (CheatSheet).

Their on-screen dynamic was electric. The way Summer playfully dismissed Seth’s affections at first, only to fall head-over-heels for him, created one of the most compelling and heartwarming love stories in the series. Fans couldn’t get enough of their opposites-attract romance, and neither could the show’s creators.

From Guest Star to Series Regular

Despite being introduced as a minor character, Bilson’s performance quickly proved too good to be sidelined. After just a handful of episodes, Schwartz and the O.C. team made a game-changing decision. They promoted Rachel Bilson to a series regular by Episode 7.

The shift happened right after the infamous Tijuana episode, where Marissa overdoses in a seedy Mexican motel. Up until that moment, Summer had been more of a comedic side character, but the episode revealed a different, more compassionate side to her, showing that she wasn’t just a ditzy party girl. She had heart.

From that moment on, Summer Roberts became an irreplaceable part of The O.C.’s core cast.

The Legacy of Summer Roberts

Rachel Bilson’s portrayal of Summer Roberts remains one of the most beloved performances in teen television history. What started as a minor, stereotypical role evolved into a nuanced, multi-dimensional character who was funny, smart, kind, and completely unforgettable.

And while Bilson never got the role of Marissa Cooper that she initially wanted, it’s hard to imagine The O.C. without her as Summer. In many ways, her story is the perfect Hollywood tale, proof that sometimes, the roles we don’t get lead us to the ones we were meant to play all along.

Summer Roberts was more than just Seth Cohen’s love interest. She was a force of nature, a character who brought humor, heart, and an undeniable spark to the world of The O.C.. And thanks to Rachel Bilson’s incredible performance, she remains one of the most iconic TV characters of the early 2000s.
