Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in a joint attack by the U.S. and Israel, Iranian state media reported on Sunday. They have declared 40 days of public mourning following the news of the death of the Iranian top dog.
Following the news of his death, Khamenei posted a message on his official X account and shared a verse from the Quran:
“In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Among the faithful are men who fulfill what they have pledged to Allah: there are some among them who have fulfilled their pledge, and some of them who still wait, and they have not changed in the least (Holy Quran 33:23).”
State media reported that Khamenei was only performing his duty and was in his office when the attack happened.
“This cowardly attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning,” the state media statement read.
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, also known as the Revolutionary Guards, confirmed the death of Khamenei and provided a tribute to the deceased.
“We have lost a great leader, and we are mourning him, a leader who was unique in purity of spirit, strength of faith, resourcefulness in affairs, courage in the face of the arrogant, and jihad in the path of God,” the Revolutionary Guards reported.
On Sunday morning, Iranian sources like Fars News Agency reported that Khamenei’s daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter were also killed in the strikes.
“After establishing contact with informed sources in the Supreme Leader’s household, the news of the martyrdom of the daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter of the Revolutionary Leader has unfortunately been confirmed,” Fars reported.
