Just over three years have passed since J Hus released Big Conspiracy, one of 2020’s most critically acclaimed albums worldwide, which earned him a BRIT Award for Best British Male.
His 2017 debut studio album Common Sense cemented him as a rap champ and innovator; and in between both albums, he nabbed multiple features from some of the music industry’s biggest artists, including Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Skepta, and Dave.
Hus’ third album, Beautiful and Brutal Yard, has been a long time coming. The title is a reference to the two sides of Hus and his heart and is named after the patois-influenced slang term for home.
Magisterial lead single “It’s Crazy” is the album’s fierce comeback track. Listen and close your eyes: you can almost see the spit glistening against the mic, the fury in your headphones. Sailing across the beat, there are instructions and reflections on how little fame matters in the pursuit of power, as Hus comes back to claim his throne against the posers with lyrical menace. Repeat the hook. “The devil in me / the demon in me.” It’s all about Hus holding a mirror up to the world around us – a world that was flipped on its head since the release of his last album, for a whole myriad of reasons. The single charted in the Top 15 of the Official UK Singles Charts.
“Who Told You,” Hus’ second single, reminds us of his unrivaled ability to create supreme shut-down-the-block party music. Just when you think it can’t get any better, none other than Drake appears, and with his effortless rap flow, he stamps the track as the unrivaled summer anthem of 2023. The long-awaited collaboration provided a full-circle moment for these two music titans. The song received 18 million first-week streams worldwide and peaked at number two on the Official UK Singles Charts.
During his sold-out London show at the “O3” aka O2 Arena on April 5th, 2019, Drake welcomed Hus home in the most epic way possible by inviting him on stage in front of 20,000 screaming fans – a truly emotional and celebratory night.
All roads lead back to the music for Hus. When you look closely at the album title Beautiful and Brutal Yard, you’ll notice an acronym: BABY. Music is Hus’ baby, whether it’s brutal, beautiful, or somewhere in the middle.
This is never more clear and present than on his third studio album. The stage is set. The man goes by several monikers: Uju Militer, The Farda, Ezmalay, and The Ugliest (so named after his clothing brand of the same name). But there is only one J Hus.
