Jennifer Lawrence Joins Instagram With One Rule: “If Anyone Says Anything Negative, I Will Quit Immediately”

Jennifer Lawrence has finally joined Instagram but already seems unsure about whether to continue.

She posted a video on her Instagram page this week in which she tells subscribers she’ll leave the platform right away if anyone says something negative.

“So, yeah, I’m giving it a shot, and if anyone says anything negative, I will quit immediately. No questions asked,” Lawrence said in the video. “If anyone thinks something mean, I’ll know. I’ll know. And I’ll quit.”

The Oscar winner created her verified account with the handle @jlaw on Wednesday, September 9th. The profile description explains her nickname choice: “jenniferlawrence was taken.” Her account follows 46 other accounts, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese, who starred in “What Happens at Night” with her; actor Josh Hutcherson from the “Hunger Games” franchise; and her friends, Dakota Johnson and Suki Waterhouse. She already had close to 800,000 followers before making her first Instagram post.

This is a major development for the 36-year-old actress, who has remained away from social media for more than ten years. Back in 2014, in one interview, she said she’d never open a Twitter account because she has problems with phones and technology and can hardly cope with emails. She even warned fans back then that any Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts opened under her name are not legitimate, and said she doesn’t even use these platforms because of what the internet has done to her. One of the official Facebook pages operated by her team members was closed soon after.

Lawrence has become more cautious following the 2014 celebrity photo hack scandal. Among the first stolen pictures released online in August 2014, there were private pictures of Lawrence as well. They are believed to have been stolen from the celebrities’ private Apple accounts, though Apple said iCloud wasn’t hacked. Talking publicly about the incident for the first time, Lawrence told Vanity Fair, “It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime.”

Nonetheless, she kept watching from the sidelines. During the 2018 InStyle interview, Lawrence described herself as a lurker who just scrolls without posting, saying, “I watch, I don’t speak,” in connection with some backlash. Recently, she told Fandango that she “gets into fights on TikTok,” meaning she engages in the app’s comment sections.

Her debut comes shortly after making headlines at a fashion event, where she jokingly used the word “fascism” instead of “fashion.”

After winning the Oscar for her role in “Silver Linings Playbook,” the actress has many projects scheduled for the coming year. Lawrence is rumored to have a supporting role in the forthcoming “Hunger Games” prequel, which will hit theaters in November, and is also set to star in “What Happens at Night” in the new year.
