Jennifer Lopez stirred controversy on social media when she stated that only those born in New York City’s five boroughs are legitimate New Yorkers. The comments were made during a viral video show known as Subway Takes.

Lopez, born in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, appeared on Kareem Rahma’s show Subway Takes. The host usually asks questions like, “So what’s your take?” to guests and random people on the subway.

“Everybody wants to claim our city, but you have to be born in New York,” Lopez said. “You have to be born in one of the five boroughs to be a New Yorker.”

Rahma revealed that he himself moved to New York in 2012 and was told he could consider himself a New Yorker after 10 years, yet the celebrity did not agree with that opinion.

“I did not sign the petition,” Lopez stated. Rahma added that he pays taxes to New York, yet Lopez remained firm in her view.

“When you’re born in New York is when you’re really a New Yorker,” she said. “I said what I said. I meant it.”

Her statements rapidly spread across social media, with both sides taking a stance for or against her opinion. Actress Kerry Washington wrote that she agrees with it “100%.” Yet, others criticized Lopez’s take for ignoring the city’s heritage.

“This is anti-immigrant!!!!” Keith Edwards, a media personality, commented. An X user called Lopez’s opinion “one of the dumbest takes ever for a city of immigrants and one of the most welcoming cities in the world.” “This actress invented blood and soil nationalism out of vague lefty intuitions,” wrote another user.

Others pointed out the city’s demographic situation, with about 40 percent of its inhabitants born elsewhere. Moreover, NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani was born outside the US.

However, this is not the first time Lopez has become famous in New York in a viral story. Two years ago, the internet went wild over Lopez’s favorite bodega order: ham and cheese on a roll and orange juice, which was shown in a Vogue clip.

Moreover, on Subway Takes, Lopez joked that “self-love should be a subject in school from kindergarten all the way through college.”

The actress is currently promoting her newest movie, Office Romance, starring Brett Goldstein, and released on Netflix.
