Jesse Jo Stark Unveils “colorado,” a Haunting First Taste of New Album MUSE

Jesse Jo Stark, an artist who makes music as a singer-songwriter, will launch a new album titled “MUSE” on November 6th. At the same time, Stark released the album’s first single, “colorado,” along with an official music video.

This album was created during three snowy weeks in Aspen, Colorado. She collaborated with her closest friends and long-time partners. Isolated from everything happening in the outside world, she found that the surrounding mountain environment let her create without restrictions and reach a new level of emotional clarity.

The new album includes many hints of the mood in which Stark previously wrote songs. The characteristic dark, cinematic atmosphere remains, but it becomes more subtle, rawer, more spacious, and stripped down on the new album. This album mixes melancholy, Americana, bruised rock, and singer-songwriter traditions.

In “colorado,” one can notice the change mentioned above. It is a simple, melodic song with melancholic guitars where the voice sounds intimate. There are no unnecessary instruments or effects, so the production is minimal and lets you hear Stark’s voice in its original form.

“colorado” is “the womb of the mountains.” This physical location and the mood became the basis for the album “MUSE.”

The song’s simplicity reveals every fracture and nuance in Stark’s voice and songwriting. The same atmosphere carries over into the song’s music video.

Across the album, Stark expresses the freedom that can come from emotional collapse, which she achieved during the recordings in Colorado through her femininity.

“It was the time to speak without boundaries,” she said. “Even though I felt broken, I also felt an immense amount of freedom. Each day felt so precious. Like I was dancing with a woman I had been hiding from. I was clear.”

The new album turned out honest and courageous, thanks to the new emotional level she reached.

“Writing is like bleeding,” Stark said. “It’s gonna be a b***h to sing these songs.”
